At The Smile Lounge, Dr. Kurt Tran takes the time to evaluate every option before recommending removal, and when extraction is the right choice, he performs it in-house in Los Alamitos with precision, care, and a clear aftercare plan.
Book AppointmentKeeping your natural teeth is always the goal, but there are situations where removing a tooth is the most appropriate and necessary course of action.
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible above the gumline and can be removed without surgical intervention. Using local anesthesia to ensure your comfort, Dr. Tran will loosen the tooth using specialized instruments before carefully removing it from the socket. Simple extractions are a routine, predictable procedure and are commonly performed for teeth that are severely decayed, broken beyond repair, or need to be removed to address crowding. Most patients experience only mild soreness in the days following the procedure, which resolves quickly with proper aftercare.
Surgical extractions are used when a tooth has not fully erupted, is broken off at the gumline, or has a root structure that makes simple removal insufficient. This includes impacted wisdom teeth, which are among the most common surgical extractions performed. Impacted wisdom teeth that are unable to erupt properly can cause pain, crowding, and infection if left untreated. Dr. Tran removes both erupted and impacted wisdom teeth in-house at The Smile Lounge, using local anesthesia and advanced imaging to plan the procedure accurately before making any incision.
Dr. Tran will always explore every option for saving a tooth before recommending extraction. That said, there are circumstances where extraction is clearly the most appropriate course of action. These include teeth with severe decay or fractures that cannot be adequately restored with a crown or other restorative treatment, teeth with advanced periodontal disease that have lost significant bone support, impacted teeth causing pain or crowding, and teeth that need to be removed as part of orthodontic treatment planning. In cases involving infection, extraction may be necessary when the infection cannot be resolved through root canal therapy or antibiotics alone. Whatever the reason, Dr. Tran will explain the situation clearly and walk you through the extraction process before moving forward. Following the procedure, he will also discuss tooth replacement options, particularly dental implants, which are the most reliable long-term solution for preventing bone loss and restoring full chewing function after a tooth is removed.
Discuss Your Options
Recovery from a tooth extraction is typically straightforward, especially for simple procedures. Some bleeding, swelling, and soreness in the first 24 to 48 hours is normal and expected. Keeping gauze on the extraction site for the first few hours and following Dr. Tran's aftercare instructions closely will help support proper healing. It is important to avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, and vigorous rinsing in the first few days, as these activities can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the socket, a condition known as dry socket, which is uncomfortable and delays healing. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a day or two following a simple extraction, while surgical extractions may require a slightly longer recovery window. Dr. Tran will provide you with detailed written aftercare instructions and will schedule a follow-up visit to confirm the site is healing as expected. If you experience increasing pain, swelling, or fever after your extraction, contact our office right away.
