Dental emergencies do not wait for a convenient time, and neither do we. At The Smile Lounge, we prioritize same-day appointments for patients experiencing urgent dental concerns so you are not left waiting in pain or risking further damage to your tooth.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Dental emergencies come in many forms, and knowing what qualifies as one can help you act quickly. Some of the most common situations we see include severe or persistent toothaches, cracked or broken teeth, teeth that have been knocked out or partially dislodged, lost or damaged crowns and fillings, dental abscesses, soft tissue injuries involving the lips, gums, or cheeks, and significant swelling around the jaw or face. If you are unsure whether your situation requires urgent care, call us, we would rather you reach out and let us help you determine next steps than wait and allow the problem to worsen.

What to Do Before You Arrive

While you are on your way to The Smile Lounge, there are a few steps you can take to protect your tooth and manage discomfort. If a tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown rather than the root, rinse it gently with water without scrubbing, and try to keep it moist, either by placing it back in the socket, holding it between your cheek and gum, or storing it in a small container of milk. For a cracked or broken tooth, rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. For pain and swelling in general, over-the-counter pain relievers can help in the short term. Call our office as soon as possible so we can prepare for your arrival and advise you further based on your specific situation.

Toothaches and Dental Infections

A toothache that is severe, persistent, or accompanied by swelling, fever, or a bad taste in your mouth should always be treated as an urgent concern. These symptoms can indicate a dental abscess, an infection at the root of the tooth or in the surrounding gum tissue, that requires prompt attention. Left untreated, a dental infection can spread beyond the tooth and become a serious health risk. At The Smile Lounge, Dr. Tran will evaluate the affected tooth using digital x-rays and, when appropriate, 3D imaging to get a complete picture of what is happening before recommending treatment. Depending on the severity of the infection, treatment may involve endodontic care in Los Alamitos, antibiotics, or in some cases a tooth extraction to eliminate the source of infection and relieve your pain.

Broken, Chipped, and Knocked-Out Teeth

Trauma to the teeth can range from a minor chip to a complete avulsion, and the urgency of each situation varies accordingly. A small chip that is not causing pain may not require same-day attention, but any fracture that exposes the inner tooth structure, a tooth that has been knocked loose, or a tooth that has been fully knocked out should be treated as quickly as possible. The window for successfully reimplanting a knocked-out tooth is narrow, ideally within 30 to 60 minutes, so time is genuinely a factor. For broken or damaged teeth that cannot be saved, Dr. Tran can discuss restorative options, including dental implants in Los Alamitos, to replace the tooth and restore full function and appearance.

A dental emergency is generally any situation involving severe pain, significant damage to a tooth, signs of infection, or trauma to the mouth that requires prompt attention to prevent the problem from worsening. Act quickly. Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root, and rinse it gently with water without scrubbing. If possible, try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it moist by storing it between your cheek and gum or in a small container of milk. Call our office immediately.
