Dental emergencies come in many forms, and knowing what qualifies as one can help you act quickly. Some of the most common situations we see include severe or persistent toothaches, cracked or broken teeth, teeth that have been knocked out or partially dislodged, lost or damaged crowns and fillings, dental abscesses, soft tissue injuries involving the lips, gums, or cheeks, and significant swelling around the jaw or face. If a tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown rather than the root, rinse it gently with water without scrubbing, and try to keep it moist, either by placing it back in the socket, holding it between your cheek and gum, or storing it in a small container of milk. For a cracked or broken tooth, rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. For pain and swelling in general, over-the-counter pain relievers can help in the short term. Call our office as soon as possible so we can prepare for your arrival and advise you further based on your specific situation.
A toothache that is severe, persistent, or accompanied by swelling, fever, or a bad taste in your mouth should always be treated as an urgent concern. These symptoms can indicate a dental abscess, an infection at the root of the tooth or in the surrounding gum tissue, that requires prompt attention. Left untreated, a dental infection can spread beyond the tooth and become a serious health risk. At The Smile Lounge, Dr. Tran will evaluate the affected tooth using digital x-rays and, when appropriate, 3D imaging to get a complete picture of what is happening before recommending treatment.
